The Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is an extraordinary trekking through the lush greenery of the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, providing an in-depth experience of the stunning architecture of the Garhwal Himalayas. The trail varies from about 3,300 m at its lowest point to about 3,800 m at its highest; this trek features an extraordinary contrast between the dense, heavily wooded areas of ancient, mossy oaks and rhododendrons and the vast, windy, wide-open spaces found in Asia's most beautiful alpine pastures (Bugyals). Both Ali and Bedni Bugyal form a natural amphitheatre: the beautiful Ali Bugyal lies flat and rolling like a massive, velvety green carpet stretched all the way to the clouds, while Bedni Bugyal completes this image with its sacred Bedni Kund (an alpine glacial lake), which reflects the jagged peaks surrounding it. The Ali Bedni Bugyal trek is famous for its proximity to some of the most striking mountains you will see - the silver white mountain range of Mt. Trishul and the tall, gently sloping snow-covered peaks of Nanda Ghunti - both of which are so large and close that they create an incredible sense of awe as they dominate the surrounding landscape with their sheer size and grandeur. The Ali Bedni Bugyal trek is an unforgettable experience that brings together both pilgrimage and adventure in the Himalayas. The journey is rich in cultural meaning and takes place in the Himalayan region every twelve years, as part of the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, a significant pilgrimage. As one treks along this epic route, they will encounter beautifully scented wild herbs, stunning views of the Himalayan mountains and experience only the sound of distant sheep bells chiming as they trek through vast empty spaces so far away from civilization. It doesn't matter if one is trekking across the wonderfully colorful flowered meadows of the monsoon season or the warm golden earth of the autumn season, this trek is an important rite of passage for anyone wanting to experience the grandeur and magnificence of the Himalayas.

Basic details for the day: Starting at an elevation of 1,200 ft. in Rishikesh, you will follow a winding road through dramatic terrain in the Garhwal Himalayas before arriving at an elevation of 7,600 ft. in Lohajung (approximately 210 km away) after 9 -10 hours. This is an easy day to do physically; however, it requires a lot of energy to drive and there are a lot of hairpin turns and steep grades on the road. You will be staying in a hotel or guesthouse for the evening; this will be your last place to have access to all the amenities and comforts. The temperature during the day will be about 15°C and when the sun sets behind the ridge, it will drop to about 5°C.
Route Description and Terrain Insights: The route to Lohajung involves a dramatic uphill drive through the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas; you will be leaving the broad, humid Ganges river valley and entering the steep, narrow vertical corridors of the inner mountain range (Himalayas). The terrain consists of a series of high-altitude highways winding their way along the Alaknanda and Pindar river, as you ascend the elevation changes from tropical rain forest to temperate forests of pine and cedar. The roads are known for their many hairpins and steep grades, tracing the edges of deep gorges and providing continuously changing views of the vast valley below.
Natural and Scenic Highlights: As you drive along the route to Lohajung, the most spectacular sight is found in the Prayags, the locations where two or more sacred rivers meet. Most notably, you will see Devprayag and Karnaprayag, where the waters of several different glacial rivers combine together; they appear to have distinctly different colours. As you drive further along the valleys of Chamoli, the valley walls become more rugged, creating a noticeable difference in air quality. As you get closer to Lohajung, if the sky is clear, you will have an amazing view of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul rising up on top of the horizon before you.
Cultural and Local Touchpoints: In addition to seeing some of the most spectacular sights available in the mountains, you are also immersing yourself in the enduring culture of the Pahari (mountain) people. As you drive along the road, you will be passing through many small villages (such as Tharali and Dewal) that are busy with market activities. Here you will see many of the traditional stone-roof homes that the Pahari live in and people working on their terrace farms. Lohajung, where there is much mythological significance to the name, is commemorated by the legendary battle between the goddess Durga and the demon Lohasur; Lohajung literally means Iron War. At the end of your time in Lohajung, you will have experienced a lifestyle that is dictated by and dedicated to the rhythms of the mountains and that is much different from what you may be accustomed to back home.
Safety and Acclimatization Guidelines: When arriving at Day 1, it is important to manage days of rapid 3,000 ft altitude change and motion sickness. To do this you must remain vigilant in your focus on the horizon and avoid looking at screens; due to commuting to/from base camp you will encounter multiple winding roads and your vestibular (balance) system will attempt to compensate for your movements (possible motion sickness). Also, it's essential to replenish lost water through intense hydration within 24 hours (3-4 litres of water) with the intention of sustaining your blood's oxygen level; this act mentally primes you to the lesser oxygen in the atmosphere at basecamp.
Experience Notes by our trekkers who completed this trek: Based on numerous testimonials can affirm that those who have gone through this trek think of it as a sensory bridge from one physical reality to another due to either the acclimating to real cold air through breath or by suddenly experiencing emotion upon exiting the car (the coldest air ever), thus resulting in an immediate scramble for a fleece jacket. Further, the long vehicle ride is noted as the best time for team members to bond as they share the same awesomeness of seeing the tall peaks rising in the background as well as those that remain silent for an entire day. All of these factors increase the sense of nervous anticipation since their first impression of the size of the Himalayas will now be witnessed by their own physical presence.
Camp Information & Logistics: You will be staying overnight in a hotel or guest house in Lohajung before heading to the tents. Lohajung is also the last place you will have dependable electricity, mobile phones (if you use Jio and BSNL products), or running water. Lots of logistical things happen here, such as the first health check by your trek leader will take place with an oximeter and then a detailed briefing. You'll also have your main rucksack weighed and handed to the mule team on the trekking days.
Practical tips for trekkers: Pack a small day bag with your water bottle, some snacks, and a warm jacket so you won't have to open up your large pieces of luggage during the day. If you sit in the right side of the vehicle from Rishikesh, you'll have the best views of the river confluences. Finally, ensure that you have access to your head lamp and 0-degree rated equipment. This will assist you to be ready for cold temps once you leave the vehicle and enter into the lodge for evening briefing in Lohajung.

The Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek has real trekkers who tell their stories about how the trek feels on the trail. In this section, you will learn what other trekkers say about the snow, the campgrounds, the quality of food, the safety, the trek leaders, and their experience with Trekup India.
These stories help you see what it is actually like to be on trekking, what the summit will be like, and how beautiful it is to watch the sunrise from the top of the mountain. By reading real experiences, you will be able to trust, answer any common questions you may have, and properly plan your Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek with Trekup India.
The ideal season to trek to Ali Bedni Bugyal will determine which specific personality of the high Himalayas you want to experience. Each season produces a very different landscape for you to explore and see: in early spring, the meadows are covered in a blanket of pristine white snow; during the monsoons there is abundant greenery; and autumn will create a large contrast between gold/brown fields and the blue skies from which the clouds have departed. The timing of your trek will directly affect all aspects of your experience when you trek to this location from the colours created by the alpenglow reflecting off the Trishul massif to rare alpine flowers such as Brahma Kamal that you could potentially come across while traversing the infinity ridge lines. Choosing when to go also involves finding a balance between the rugged physical conditions associated with seasonal conditions for how you will be able to traverse the terrain, e.g., navigating a slippery trail during heavy rains during the monsoon or trekking through slush left by melting snow and ice in the early spring, and the beauty of the Wan Valley as viewed in different types of weather related to your timing and distance trekked.

Our Expert trek leaders and trek guides are well known about the trekking trails with the adverse weather conditions at higher altitudes and they know how to deal if any uncertainty arises. They have years of experience in trekking adventure and suggest you with some advice for the trek.
1. Prioritize Acclimatization: Stable weather in the spring and autumn makes it easier but never rush to the trek. There is a chance of AMS problems occurring due to dry cold so be prepared, take precautionary measures with yourself.
2. Proper Layering: Temperature fluctuates instantly, especially on the higher altitude, so layering should be proper (base, mid and outer) is critical for managing sweat and preventing the cold.
3. Premium Boots: Make sure your boots are long lasting and well broken or used before your trek starts. The risk of foot injury and blister from the new boot can end your trek journey
4. Hydration: It's advisable to drink 3 to 4 litres/day. Because of high elevation and exertion, you need constant intake of fluids to overcome the effects from AMS.
5. Pace Yourself: Walk at a comfortable pace using what is called the mountaineers shuffle. This will conserve your energy and help you manage your breathing.
6. Protect Against UV Rays: Use High-Quality UV Sunglasses (Category 3 or 4) to protect your eyes from snow blindness, and use high SPF Sunscreen on your skin to protect it from sun damage.
7. Healthy Consumption: Food should consist of small amounts consumed frequently and contain a lot of nutritious ingredients and minerals. This will provide you with the sustained energy needed for trekking at high altitudes.
8. Safety: Pay attention to what your body is telling you when you are feeling AMS Symptoms. Should you believe you might be suffering from AMS, report it immediately and prepare to descend. Descending is the quickest treatment you can receive.

Your trek leaders and trek guide have years of experience in getting you to the summit but most importantly back to safety. Trekking at high-altitude requires a huge amount of respect for the mountains and therefore is a correct, safe way of doing things throughout, especially on a moderately challenging trek like Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek. This responsibility starts with full understanding of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) prevention, a strict adherence to the gradual ascent plan, and absolute understanding of emergency procedures. Your ability to follow safety procedures will determine the success and enjoyment of the trek.
Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS) is the result of the body being unable to adapt lower levels of oxygen pressure (*hypoxia*) at high altitudes (usually over 8,000 feet). The risk is that untreated AMS will progress to High Altitude Encephalopathy (HACE) or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) if the person keeps trekking higher in a state of unequipped acclimatization.
Important Symptoms of the Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS):
Mild AMS:
Severe AMS (HACE warnings):
Severe AMS (HAPE warnings):
Precautionary Measures of AMS
1. Ascent Gradual
2. Hydration and Nutrition
3. Pacing and Movement
4. Medication
First Descend is the way to treat acute mountain sickness (AMS) on the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek, emergency response (EMS) will be implemented when there is an individual exhibiting the effects of altitude sickness. If a trekker shows any signs of altitude-induced illness or injury, they will be evacuated immediately to lower elevations (e.g., Wan or Didna villages) via stretcher or mule if they can't trek. The trek leaders will monitor individual vital signs using pulsometer devices and are equipped with oxygen supply and medical kits to stabilize patients before continuing on to the nearest medical facility. Once the trekker arrives at the Lohajung road-head, they will be transported by vehicle to the nearest medical facility in Tharali or Karnaprayag (3-6 hours away). Due to extremely poor mobile phone connectivity on the track, communication will take place via pre-arranged calling points on back ridges or by using walkie-talkies with professional guides. In the case of a life-threatening emergency, Helicopter Evacuation can be arranged with the local Disaster Management Authority (DDMA)—assuming good weather and that the individual has high altitude insurance.
Action Plans: High Altitude Emergency
1. Personal Health and Honesty:
2. Gear & Equipment:
3. Conduct on the Trek:
4. Teamwork & Respect
The choice of the Emergency Exit in case of an emergency during the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek will depend on where you are currently located, but the main and fastest choice is to evacuate to the village of Wan for most parts of the trail. For example, if someone becomes sick at either Bedni Bugyal or Gehroli Patal, the team will start from Bedni Bugyal and make a rapid descent through the dense oak forests to get to the road-head at Wan (10-12 km away). There are local 4x4 vehicles waiting at the road-head, so the patient can be driven to the Lohajung base camp. For anyone who gets sick earlier in the trek from either Ali Bugyal or the Tolpani forest, the most common method of evacuation from the trek is to back trek to Didna and then descend to the road at Kulling. From either of these road-heads, the standard evacuation will be via vehicle to the Community Health Center in Tharali (1 hour from Lohajung) or to the suburban hospital with better facilities (Sub-District Hospital) in Karnaprayag (4-5 hours). Because altitude is the main cause of emergency, therefore the goal of the evacuation strategy is to reduce vertical height at the fastest possible rate in order to improve patient’s oxygen levels prior to transporting them via roadways.
1. Primary Evacuation Exits
2. Exit for Hospitals and Medical Facilities
3. Police & Administrative Authority
Local law enforcement and administrative functions for the trek consist of a base camp with local police and the main police station at Tharali working in concert.

Completion Certificate:
It is the best way to recognize someone’s adventure journey with a certificate. A well recognized certificate (IMF, ATOAI & Uttarakhand tourism development board) approved is provided to the trekker by two ways:
The Ali Bedni Bugyal trek can be considered Moderate to difficult; a relatively easy to trek, but one nonetheless with considerable demands on your body/physiological system. There are no technical trekking skills needed to complete the trek; the challenge faced is primarily due to the significant amount of altitude gain over the course of the trek, which is just under 5,000 feet (the high point of the trek being 12,550 feet). Consequently the potential for developing Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is very high if you do not properly acclimatise prior to trekking. The terrain of the trek takes you through long stretches of steep uphill in thick forest and along zig-zagging ridgelines that will test your cardiovascular endurance and leg strength. Secondly, the unpredictable weather in the mountains (hailstorms, freezing winds) creates a challenge that will require mental toughness and good quality gear. The Ali Bedni Bugyal trek is a perfect bridge trek for trekkers who will be making the move from entry-level beginner to those who would like to increase their level of trekking experience, provided that they have an adequate fitness level and have properly prepared for their trek with regular cardiovascular training.
1. Terrain: The earliest hard trek you will do
2. Altitude: Manageable but not negligible
3. Weather: The defining challenge
4. Duration and Remoteness: The Isolation
Many people underestimate the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek because it's a moderate challenge but the difficulties on this trek come into play because of the very steep ascents over 5,000 feet and the thin air once you reach elevations of 12,550 feet above sea level; if you take time out of your training for a few weeks or have limited experience with trekking, then you will struggle with the very steep switchbacks which lead to high elevation quickly, which requires excellent cardiovascular and leg strength. Your ultimate test will be the final push to high ridges where you fight uphill winds and lack of oxygen in order to reach the viewpoint.
1. Beginner Friendly: The Myth and the Reality
Most get the wrong impression from the glossy trek brochure that this is an easy trek because of its classification as a beginner trek with no technical trekkng gear such as ropes and ice axes required; however, what it really means is you can expect to trek at least 6-8 hours each day on steep trails with a lot of steps while carrying a heavy pack at high altitude. To give you a second opinion on what this trek is all about, I can tell you from experience that it's a moderate trek. If you're sedentary, you will find the vertical switchback trails of the oak forests to be far more strenuous than you probably would have imagined for a holiday.
2. The Summit Push: The Ultimate Challenge
The ultimate test of your preparation is the final 500’ of elevation gain to reach the Ali Viewpoint and Bedni Top (12,550’) where there are no trees providing shelter. At this point, the trail is a long diagonal ridge that acts like a wind tunnel creating an area of significantly lower oxygen than what you started with. Thus, the last 500’ is comparable to trekking a mile due to your cardiovascular fitness, you may find that after completing the last hour of trekking, your legs will not be functioning and that will leave your lungs gasping for breath. But, once you reach the top and trek over the ridge, you will be so happy that you made it.
1. Ali Bedni Bugyal Vs. Kuari Pass: While both treks are among the Great Garhwal Meadow Treks, Kuari Pass is more concentrated around ancient forests and ridge-walking while providing a panoramic view of Nanda Devi's peak. The treks for Ali Bedni Bugyal, meanwhile, are much larger, undulating, and are the world's largest expanse of meadowland located at the foot of the Trishul massif.
2. Ali Bedni Bugyal Vs. Har Ki Dun: Har Ki Dun is a river valley trek staying primarily below 11,675 ft on the banks of the Supin River through ancient wooden villages while Ali Bedni Bugyal is primarily a high trek balcony at the top of 12,550 ft. with sharper gradients. Har Ki Dun is a cultural/leisure trek and Ali Bedni Bugyal is for the person that wants a physical challenge as well as a top of the world scenic view.
3. Ali Bedni Bugyal Vs. Sar Pass: Sar Pass in Himachal Pradesh is a high-altitude trek (13,800 ft) consisting of long sections of snow and is a very exciting glacier slide. On the other hand, the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek is primarily a meadow trek (non-technical) and provides better photo opportunities of highest elevation peaks. In this case, Sar Pass is an adventure for the adrenaline junkie and will give them a great high.
Preparation is the key to success on an Ali Bedni Bugyal trek. Achieving the required vertical gain of 5,000 feet means developing a fitness engine before you arrive. Focus on building this engine with plenty of cardio and lower body strength training before you leave for the trek. Your lifeline during the trek will be your equipment. You need a competent, 3-layer system of clothing to keep you warm, you will also need high-ankle boots and trekking poles to ensure the safety of your knees as you make your way down the steep descent. This level of preparation will allow you to enjoy the breathtaking views from the top rather than just focus on catching your breath.
1. Physical Preparation: Engine Building
Taking on the Ali Bedni Bugyal trek is going to require over nearly a vertical 5,000 feet of elevation gain in just two days. In order to enjoy the incredible views during the trek you will have to prepare your body to get an engine.

Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is located in the mountainous region of Garhwal in India, is an important segment of the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra (the grandest of all local pilgrimages). In Garhwali culture, it is believed that the Goddess Nanda Devi travels these meadows to return to her husband's home on Mount Kailash. As such, this area holds a deep spiritual significance to people of Garhwal; Bedni Kund is considered a holy site, and Wan is home to the Latu Devta Temple and some of the largest and oldest Cypress trees in the Himalayas. More related to this trek (located lower in elevation) is Lohajung (the base camp of the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek). Lohajung is also home to a local legend regarding a battle between Goddess Parvati and the demon Lohasur, which was an important myth in the local culture. Didna (a village located along the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek route), one of the oldest examples of stone and slate construction within the Garhwal region, provides trekkers with a glimpse of the time honoured way of life based on sheep herding and the cultivation of the bright red amarnath plant.
When you trek in the Indian Himalayas, you have a responsibility to take care of the environment as well as the culture of the people who live there.
