The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek (4,950 m) is a high-altitude crossover trek with an approximate distance of 51 Km that spans 8 days. It begins at Kafnu (2,400 m) in Kinnaur and finishes at Mudh (3,810 m), an isolated village in Spiti. The ecological significance of the trek lies in its 180-degree flip in terms of ecology; covering approximately 50% of the trek in the Rupi-Bhaba Wildlife Sanctuary passing through dense forest (oak and silver birch) and the famous alpine meadows (Mulling and Kara) of Kinnaur, the last day of the trek represents a climatic doorway into the Pin Valley National Park. Although this trek is not overly technical, it does require trekkers to negotiate a 3,000 ft ascent over loose scree, glacial moraines, and occasional patches of snow from Phutsirang (4,107 m) to reach the summit. Geologically this area is interesting due to the rain shadow effect of the pass; which is located on a narrow ridge interrupting the flow of the Indian monsoon, produces vegetation on the Kinnaur side of the ridge that is lush, flowering and, on the Spiti side, a barren, sterile cold desert resembling the surface of Mars. Culturally, this trek is a connection between the Hindu-influenced orchards found in the Sutlej Valley and the Tibetan Buddhist landscape of Mudh and Kaza.
The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek (4,915 m) is a peerless trekking experience due to its dramatic style and size, a crossover trek in the Indian Himalayas. The trek is a high altitude passage from one side of the world to the other; it contains an incredible amount of scenery transformed in a matter of hours unlike many other treks which provide a gradual transition of the same kind.
1. The Incredible Geographical Change: The Pin Bhaba trek changes instantly when compared to many treks through the Himalayas, that are spread over several days and have a gradual change of scenery, through the different landscapes. The Pin Bhaba trek provides a portal experience from the lush hilly Kinnaur side with its dense forests of cedar trees and pine trees to instantaneously being in the Martian like arid landscape of oxidized red rock and purple mountains that are characteristic of the Pin Valley in Spiti. As you cross over the high point of the trek (indicated as the 4,915m peak) the Kinnaur and all of its trekking characteristics are behind you and you are facing an immediate difference in terrain from the rainforest-type environment in the Kinnaur valley to the dry, barren, and flat Spiti valley.
2. The Difference in Weather: During the rainy season between July and August, the Monsoon Season is when this is one of the few high-altitude treks to take place. Due to the brute force of the monsoon rains on one side of this mountain range, it acts as a natural wall preventing the rain clouds from passing into the dry zone on the other side. Thus creating a very dramatic weather difference between the two regions: during the first half of the trek, you are in flower-filled and rainy valleys with lots of water flowing in the Bhaba River until you cross over into the rain shadow. Once you enter Spiti Valley, the amount of rain that has fallen is near zero for several weeks; therefore, you will have dry air and a bright blue sky against which to enjoy your trek through the two areas.
3. Cultural Linkage Between Two Cultures: The trek starts in Kafnu, which is a traditional Kinnauri village. In this village, life is centered around wooden Hindu temples, apple orchards, and terraced gardens. The culture changes completely when you cross over the pass and descend into the village of Mudh; you enter a place of Tibetan Buddhism with whitewashed, mud-brick homes, colorful prayer flags known as Lungta, ancient monasteries (Gompas), and an entire way of living that is dependent on the extreme conditions of a high-altitude desert.
4. From Switzerland to Mars: The various campsites located on this trek offer some of the most diverse aesthetics of any Himalaya region. Mulling and Kara are two of the finest meadows in the world, comparable to the beauty of Switzerland or Kashmir with wide-open grassy fields, grazing Gaddi sheep, and enormous vertical cliffs made of granite. After the summit, the landscape changes to include a rugged-looking cold high altitude desolate region or terrain filled with multi-colored rocks; some made from burnt orange, deep purple and ocher rock. They appear in contrast to many massive, glacial moraines; all create an otherworldly feeling leading you to believe you are no longer on earth but have entered into another world.
5. Technical High Altitude Challenge: With a total height of 4,915 m, this trekking experience presents an intense high-altitude experience whilst presenting a less extreme degree of objective hazards than the Pin Parvati Pass. The area of specialty relates to the abundance types of terrain experienced whilst trekking: from dense forest navigation to crossing traditional wooden log bridges, as well as traversing icy glacial streams to negotiating very steep inclines of loose scree/ snow. You will have the opportunity to descend through the Pin Valley National Park, which is a protected area and home to many endangered species of wildlife and potentially you might catch a glimpse of a rare Snow Leopard or a Himalayan Ibex in the rise & fall of the rugged mountains.
This section provides a comprehensive, simple explanation of the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek, including general day-to-day routing, elevation gain, etc. The basic itinerary is designed to give an overview of the trek; all-inclusive itinerary allows for a more in-depth understanding of the various distances between campsites, the nature/type of terrain that trekkers will be traversing, and the locations of the campsite relative to one another.
In addition to the above, the trek map indicates the specific route of the trekking path, village locations, forest locations, and campsite locations within the trek area enabling trekkers to imagine their trek through snow-covered coniferous forests and alpine meadows. The elevation chart clearly indicates the total elevation gained and lost each day of the trek ensuring that trekkers can prepare adequately before arriving at the basecamp, acclimatize safely to altitude, and have a positive experience on their overall trek.
Expert Advise: If you have motion sickness problem makesure to take medication prior to the drive starts.

The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek Altitude Chart provides useful information to help trekkers keep track of their altitude change as they make their way through the trek. The chart shows how much elevation gain is made at each segment of the trek, which enables trekkers to effectively develop a plan for their pace during the trek, as well as monitor how their body reacts when they are at higher elevation. Therefore, this chart is beneficial for both beginner trekkers and experienced trekkers, mainly because they will have better preparation in terms of acclimatization and how to get the best experience from the Himalayas. Furthermore, the Altitude Chart enables trekkers to visually see how the trail will gradually go up and down, making it easier and safer to have a well-paced trek.

Basic details for the day: Your trek will require a 200 Km drive from Shimla (7,300 ft) to Kafnu (7,900 ft), and the total drivel time will be approximately 9 - 10 hours. You will drive on the Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH5), giving you an overall increase in elevation of 600 ft. This day will be your key day of driving from the commercial central hub of Himachal to the rugged and high elevation entry point into the Kinnaur District which places you at the base camp of the Bhabha Pass Trek.
Route Description and Terrain Insights: The distance from Shimla to Kafnu is about 200 Km and the drive takes 9 - 10 hours depending on how many stops you make. The journey starts at the historical Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH5), with the terrain winding through the lush pine forests and famous apple orchards of Narkanda. As you progress, the road slopes steeply down toward the Sutlej River valley below. From Rampur, the road continues to become more rugged, as the road runs along the vertically carved rock walls of the gorge, offering breathtaking views of the river rushing below you.
Natural and Scenic Highlights: The drive is a profuse visual delight starting as you make your way through the Apple Belt of Theog and Kotgarh, where you will see a plethora of some of India's best orchards before the elevation changes (cliffs are much higher than river) and the Sutlej River gorge becomes the main feature of the drive. The next change is as you near the Bhabha Valley entrance and begin the last leg from Wangtu to Kafnu, which takes you into a narrower, greener, more isolated valley with a much more wild look and feel than the main highway.
Cultural and Local Touchpoints: Immersing yourself in Kinnauri culture is a stunning experience the moment you arrive in Kinnaur district, where you will notice unique architectural designs of typical Kinnauri homes - multi-story wooden and stone buildings elaborately carved. Passing through Rampur Bushahr, you will see an ancient town which served as a significant commerce link between India and Tibet. Once you arrive at Kafnu, you are greeted by the welcoming community of a true Kinnauri village that is steeped in hospitality and whose locals wear distinctive green felt hats called Pangtu.
Safety and Acclimatization Guidelines: Although you will only gain 600 ft. in elevation, today's route to Kinnaur is unlikely to produce Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). However, due to dry mountain air, you should drink an adequate amount of fluids throughout your drive. As such, it is recommended to drink 3-4 liters of water during your entire drive. It is also worth mentioning that, because the NH5 is very twisty with sharp hairpin turns, those who suffer from motion sickness should attempt to sit in the front of the vehicle and avoid using screens. Because this driving experience is also physically demanding, it is important to relax and recover as soon as you arrive, especially before the trekking days ahead.
Experience Notes by our trekkers who completed this trek: Although it is long, please do not sleep during the Kafnu section of your drive on this leg of the journey after Rampur. The road is cut into the mountains; the view is so amazing; it will blow your mind away. When we got to Kafnu, the air was so much crisper and quieter than in Shimla. Kafnu is a great place to reset before we begin our trek. Many trekkers find this day to be a crucial mental change from the busy urban life of Shimla to the peace and stillness of the high Himalayas.
Camp Information & Logistics: Most people that make the drive to Kafnu and begin their trek, stay in guesthouses or homestays with local families (the last night you will have solid walls before going into tents). You will likely have some mobile network coverage with BSNL or Airtel; however, they may not always work, so this will be your last chance to contact anyone before you go into the dead zones we may be in while we cross the pass. There is electricity in the village of Kafnu, so it will be your last opportunity to fully charge your power banks, camera batteries and smartphone.
Practical tips for trekkers: For logistical purposes, remember that Rampur is the last place to look for a working ATM; you will have difficulty getting cash withdrawn in Kafnu. The selection of snacks, nuts and ORS is also limited in Kafnu; if you have specific items you would like to purchase, you should buy them in Shimla or Rampur before you go to Kafnu. Finally, it is advantageous to carry an easily accessible warm jacket in your daypack because the temperature drops dramatically in the valley when the sun goes down behind the steep mountain walls.

The best time for the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is between July to September when you're able to see the most dramatic changes in the two weather zones you cross on this trek. In mid-June and through the end of June, you will experience a winter wonderland as you trek through mountains covered in snow (great if you prefer the rugged appearance of high winter), and traverse snow-covered meadows and icy passes. The monsoon months from July to August are spectacular in Kinnaur: endless wildflowers fill the verdant, misty emerald fields and valleys, while on the Spiti side of the pass, the region remains dry and bright as the result of a rain shadow. By September and early October, the sky is incredibly clear with the meadows becoming golden and the trekking conditions are the most stable and perfect for photographing the night sky; however, temperatures at Pushtirang frequently drop below freezing at night. The trek is not accessible between late-October to late-May due to extreme amounts of snow and Kunzum La road is closed.

Our Expert trek leaders and trek guides are well known about the trekking trails with the adverse weather conditions at higher altitudes and they know how to deal if any uncertainty arises. They have years of experience in trekking adventure and suggest you with some advice for the trek.
1. Prioritize Acclimatization: Stable weather in the spring and autumn makes it easier but never rush to the trek. There is a chance of AMS problems occurring due to dry cold so be prepared, take precautionary measures with yourself.
2. Proper Layering: Temperature fluctuates instantly, especially on the higher altitude, so layering should be proper (base, mid and outer) is critical for managing sweat and preventing the cold.
3. Premium Boots: Make sure your boots are long lasting and well broken or used before your trek starts. The risk of foot injury and blister from the new boot can end your trek journey
4. Hydration: It's advisable to drink 3 to 4 litres/day. Because of high elevation and exertion, you need constant intake of fluids to overcome the effects from AMS.
5. Pace Yourself: Walk at a comfortable pace using what is called the mountaineers shuffle. This will conserve your energy and help you manage your breathing.
6. Protect Against UV Rays: Use High-Quality UV Sunglasses (Category 3 or 4) to protect your eyes from snow blindness, and use high SPF Sunscreen on your skin to protect it from sun damage.
7. Healthy Consumption: Food should consist of small amounts consumed frequently and contain a lot of nutritious ingredients and minerals. This will provide you with the sustained energy needed for trekking at high altitudes.
8. Safety: Pay attention to what your body is telling you when you are feeling AMS Symptoms. Should you believe you might be suffering from AMS, report it immediately and prepare to descend. Descending is the quickest treatment you can receive.

Your trek leaders and trek guide have years of experience in getting you to the summit but most importantly back to safety. Trekking at high-altitude requires a huge amount of respect for the mountains and therefore is a correct, safe way of doing things throughout, especially on a moderately challenging trek like Pin Bhaba Pass Trek. This responsibility starts with full understanding of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) prevention, a strict adherence to the gradual ascent plan, and absolute understanding of emergency procedures. Your ability to follow safety procedures will determine the success and enjoyment of the trek.
Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS) is the result of the body being unable to adapt lower levels of oxygen pressure (*hypoxia*) at high altitudes (usually over 8,000 feet). The risk is that untreated AMS will progress to High Altitude Encephalopathy (HACE) or High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) if the person keeps trekking higher in a state of unequipped acclimatization.
Important Symptoms of the Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS):
Mild AMS:
Severe AMS (HACE warnings):
Severe AMS (HAPE warnings):
Precautionary Measures of AMS
1. Ascent Gradual
2. Hydration and Nutrition
3. Pacing and Movement
4. Medication
The reliability of trekker safety is championed by a robust emergency response and evacuation protocol, especially within the wilderness of the Pin Bhaba Pass where altitudes can reach as high as 16,000 feet in elevation, the terrain can change quickly between glacier-capped ridges and dense forests. Therefore, the overall philosophy of operating above such high altitudes is to create an environment of Safety First that values the early detection of altitude-related illnesses and bodily injuries ahead of making it to the summit.
As part of our response framework, we utilize certified medical professionals to provide on the spot first-aid (or evacuation) as well as conducting constant, real-time medical monitoring of all trekkers so that they remain stable while maintaining a safe connection with all local authorities in the Kinnaur and Spiti areas. Finally, in an emergency, our priority is to stabilize all injured/ill trekkers and evacuate them to lower elevations as quickly and safely as possible, while also ensuring that all trekkers are accompanied with a minimum of a two-tiered safety net that encompasses each trekker, from their most remote campsite, to his/her nearest specialized medical facility.
Action Plans: High Altitude Emergency
If we experience a High-Altitude Emergency, such as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), our response will be to detect, stabilize, descend according to an established protocol, allowing us to provide for a speedy recovery.
1. Personal Health and Honesty
2. Gear & Equipment
3. Conduct on the Trek
4. Teamwork & Respect
The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek splits into two exits, one at summit elevation of 16,105 ft. The exit options for emergencies that occur on the trek between Kafnu and Pushtirang (Days 2 to 5), would be as follows: Back track and descend to Kafnu, at 7,878 ft., where there is access to medical facilities in Bhavnagar or Reckong Peo. If the summit of Pin Bhaba Pass is reached (Days 6 to 7), the only option left to leave the trek and reach medical care is to continue forward into Spiti and descend quickly to Mudh, at 12,270 ft., for transportation to the High Altitude Health Centre at Kaza. At the Pushtirang Base, we enforce a no-go policy for any trekker who displays altitude sickness and will not be allowed to ascend the pass and must return to Pushtirang Base. If someone needs to be evacuated from an emergency and cannot be manually evacuated by others, Helios-evacuation will be coordinated with the District Authorities; however, the availability of helicopters depends on the weather and the availability of a military helicopter.
1. Primary Evacuation Points:
The Pin Bhaba Pass (16,105 feet) divides the evacuation plan route in half from Kafnu to the Pushtirang base camp. The Kafnu-Kafnu backtrack route down through the Mulling Meadows (the lowest point) is the primary means of evacuation for emergencies that occur between these two locations during the first four days of the trek. If an accident occurs after the summit has been reached, trekkers can only evacuate via the forward descent into the Spiti Valley by following the glacial moraine down to Mudh (minimum elevation being 12,270').
2. Medical Facilities and Hospital Facilities:
Emergency medical assistance will be provided at two major altitude hospitals (CHC) nearest the normal roadhead access on either side of this trek. In Kinnaur, trekkers will be transported to the Community Health Centre (CHC) located in Bhabanagar (approximately 22 km from Kafnu) or the more advanced Regional Hospital in Reckong Peo (approximately 55 km from Kafnu), for trauma and respiratory problems. Any trekkers having to be transported from Mudh down to Kaza via CHC will be at a facility with oxygen banks specifically designated to treat trekkers who experience High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and Cerebral Edema (HACE) while on the trek (approximately 48 km from Mudh).
3. Public Law Enforcement Agency and Local Government
Coordination of rescue operations and trail safety operates through a series of local jurisdictions and law enforcement agencies spread over two districts for Kinnaur and Spiti. The Bhabanagar Police Station manages the ascent of the Kinnaur Trail, while the Kaza Police Station manages the descent of the Spiti Trail and also supports the village of Mudh.
Heli-evacuations, an example of unique rescue operations are approved and coordinated by either the office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in Kaza or the office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) in Reckong Peo. Since the trail traverses into protected areas, the Wildlife Range Office in Kaza has jurisdiction over managing access to and providing for safety on the trail as it passes through Pin Valley National Park.

Upper Body | Moisture-Wicking T-Shirts (2) | Choose Synthetic (polyester) or thin Merino wool; short or long sleeve because cotton actively makes you cold and uncomfortable when you sweat. |
Thermal Base Layer (1) | Mid-weight Merino wool or synthetic long-sleeve top. Provides immediate insulation; it will lock in body heat as the starting point of your heat-trapping system.
Fleece Jacket (1) | Mid-to-heavy weight (200-300 GSM) fleece or softshell jacket full of insulation. This layer provides the best warmth-to-weight ratio It can be worn alone or under your shell.
Insulated Puffed Jacket (1) | Down or synthetic insulation; rated for 0∘C and below. Your main source of heat protection for cold night camping, evening, and the summit push when below freezing conditions are anticipated.
Waterproof & Windproof Jacket (1) | Shell material (e.g. Gore-Tex equivalent) with taped seams. Your outer barrier (shell layer) keeps the rain, snow and penetrating wind out from the mountains.
Lower Body | Quick-Dry Trekking Pants (2) | Synthetic, lightweight, and preferably stretchable or convertible. Durable for comfortable walking, fast drying after getting wet from rain or snow. |
Thermal Base Layer (1) | Mid-weight thermal bottoms (wool or synthetic). Vital layer of insulation under your trekking pants in cold walking conditions at camp.
Waterproof Rain Pants (1) | Lightweight, packable shell pants. These will protect your trekking pants and base layers from getting wet when it's snowing or raining heavily.
For Feets | Create a seal between your boots and trousers to prevent snow from entering your boots / sock. | Put your gaiters on as soon as you reach the snowline; avoiding snow wetting your socks / boots minimizes risk for cold injury. |
Trekking Socks (4-5 pairs) | Wool or some kind of synthetic blend (not cotton). 1-2 pairs should be extraordinarily thick for nights. These will manage moisture in your foot to reduce blisters and provide warmth at night sleeping in a bag or in boots!
Camp Shoes | Lightweight sneakers, sandals, or slippers. You'll want these to dry out your trekking boots and let your feet rest when at the campsite. |

Completion Certificate:
It is the best way to recognize someone’s adventure journey with a certificate. A well recognized certificate (IMF, ATOAI & Uttarakhand tourism development board) approved is provided to the trekker by two ways:
The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is a difficult high-altitude trail of approximately 60 km that lasts for between 7 and 8 days. It starts in Kafnu (at an elevation of 7,878 ft) and involves a steep uphill of about 2,800 ft in one day to reach Mulling, one of the highest altitudes in Himachal Pradesh, making it very challenging for those who are still trying to acclimatize to the elevation. The highest point on the trek will be the summit of Pin Bhaba Pass (16,100 ft), where the available oxygen will be about 55% of that found at sea level. Pass Day will be your longest day of work, approximately 12 to 15 km of trekking. You will begin trekking at 3:00 AM on that day and will have to trek for 10 to 12 hours to complete the steep boulder fields, loose scree and potential snow bridges, and then descend very rapidly (3,800 ft) into the Spiti desert. You must be in top physical condition to undertake this trek; you will need to have enough cardiovascular endurance so that you can run 5 km in less than 30 minutes and sufficient strength to carry a 10 to 12 kg pack for all types of terrain, including lush forests and unstable glacial moraines.
1. Terrain: The earliest hard trek you will do
2. Altitude: Manageable but not negligible
3. Weather: The defining challenge
4. Duration and Remoteness: The Isolation
The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is often described as a moderate entry point into the trans-Himalayas. This can be an extremely inaccurate assessment and potentially dangerous for people who have no experience trekking. Unlike technical uphills, which have the potential of using ascending walls to scale vertical distances (e.g., ice), this trek is primarily a long-distance trek measuring 50 km from beginning to end with final summit elevation of 16,105 feet (4,900 m) or greater in altitude. You must examine your ability to traverse this distance and summit, and consider that the picture perfect meadows found there will have very little significance compared to the actual thin air environment that accompanies this trek.
1. Beginner Friendly: The Myth and the Reality
The common myth is that the Pin Bhaba Pass is simply a step up from beginner treks such as Kedarkantha. In fact, the brutal 2,800 feet (853 m) elevation gain on day 2 alone will prove this is untrue. Rather, it is a level 3 endurance trek (50 km) with no civilization, electricity or easy access for seven days. As trekkers will be operating on less than 55% of the available sea level oxygen, they will spend the majority of the time in sub-zero temperatures and will also be subject to the extreme physical stressors which most entry level trekkers cannot handle. If you cannot run 5 km in less than 32 minutes or carry a 10 kg pack for six hours, the moderate designation is a highly misleading description of this trek. This trek should be reserved for people with previous experience above 14,000 ft.
2. The Summit Push: The Ultimate Challenge
The ascent from Pushtirang ( 13,451 ft) to the 16,105 ft summit takes 10-12 hours and starts at 3 am in complete darkness. You will need to trek an additional 2,654 ft through freezing winds and very complex terrain on the way to the summit with deep ( to the waist) post-holding snow and unstable glacial moraines. After reaching the summit, the challenge continues; you will now have to descend 3,800 ft down loose sliding shale or dusty scree while you are physically exhausted. The day of this knee crushing descent is about 80% mental, as this will be the greatest test of endurance you'll experience as you battle against hypoxia, cold, or muscle fatigue; therefore it will probably be the most difficult and demanding portion of your entire trek.
1. The Step-Up Trekker: This is an option for trekkers who have completed Level 2 treks such as Hampta Pass or Beas Kund and are looking for a more significant challenge, giving you a solid foundation for the Level 4 expedition. You should already know how your body reacts to sleeping at 12,000 feet.
2. Landscape Minimalist: If you love huge contrasts, you can’t miss this trek. You have the opportunity to see two dramatically different landscapes in just 50 km, going from the lush, rain forest of Kinnaur to the stark, wind-carved desert of Spiti.
3. High Endurance Athlete: Due to the 2,800-foot elevation gain on Day 2 and the 12-hour summit marathon, this trek is an ideal fit for a serious athlete/runner. This trek is intended for individuals capable of running 5 km in less than 30 minutes and who will have enough mental grit to trek through shifting scree and boulders for more than 10 consecutive hours.
1. Pin Bhaba Vs. Hampta Pass:
There are two great treks that differ in physical challenge and size - Hampta Pass is a four-day easy trek (max elevation: 14,035 ft) whereas Pin Bhaba is a seven-day endurance trek (max elevation: 16,105 ft) with a much higher level of difficulty due to the longer distance on the latter (nearly double), higher vertical elevation gain which ultimately results in much more strain on your lungs than the former (Hampta). The choice is clear if you did not find Hampta Pass too challenging. You will find that Pin Bhaba will now be the best next step into undertaking serious expeditions in the Himalayas.
2. Pin Bhaba Vs. Bali Pass:
In comparing two different treks like Bali Pass (16,207 ft) and Pin Bhaba, you're presented with two distinctly different types of challenges - either technical (Bali Pass) or endurance (Pin Bhaba). Bali Pass is well-known for its level of technicality, which often requires micro spikes or ropes to manage the razor-sharp ridges and near vertical snowfall. However, due to the potential for a very long Pass Day, many people consider Pin Bhaba to be the more difficult trek because of the length of time and sustained endurance you'll need, as well as your logistics and the remoteness of the trek. Ultimately, you'll want to make the decision based on what you want out of the trek. If your goal is to push the upper limits of your technical abilities and seek an adrenaline rush of sorts, you'll want to attempt Bali Pass; but if you're interested in seeing the most spectacular and dramatic changes in scenery across a single trek in the Himalayas, you'll want to choose Pin Bhaba.
3. Goechala Vs. Pin Bhaba:
The difference between Goechala and Pin Bhaba is that Goechala is a test of how far and the challenge of reaching Goechala is based on the number of vertical feet you're going up. Goechala (15,100 ft) is a world-renowned test of your legs because it covers 90 km with a series of significant ascents through the beautiful Rhododendron forests found in Sikkim. On the other hand, Pin Bhaba is a test of your lungs because the altitude you'll be at is higher and the ascent is extremely aggressive, putting your acclimatization process to the test. In general, Goechala is the best option for those who want an up-close view of the majestic Kanchenjunga massif, and Pin Bhaba is for those who want the experience of trekking through a beautiful area at a very high rate of speed.
The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek will be successful when you reach 16,100 feet; however, it is not the summit that determines success, but weeks of preparation before the trek. This is a high-altitude trek that will punish the average trekker, yet it will reward the well-trained trekker with outstanding geological features on the planet. Since you will trek through two different climatic conditions you will have a very small margin for error. To make sure you do not just make it over the pass, but do well enough to take in the scenery, you must focus on two things during your final phase of preparation: building a high-torque cardiovascular engine and developing a gear kit as a mobile life-support system, which will enable you to be well-prepared for the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek.
1. Physical Preparation: Engine Building
In order to achieve daily elevation gains of 2,800 ft, you need to create a high torque (high power) engine to conquer the 2,800 ft of daily elevation gain rather than building your engine to be fast only. For your training emphasis to have an effect, you must train your body mainly in the way of Zone 2 aerobic endurance so your heart can sustain efforts of long duration at altitude. Following this will be artificial stair climbing with a weighted pack to start training specifically for the never-ending ascent up Pushtirang and the quadriceps burning descent into Spiti. If at sea level you cannot run 5km comfortably in under 32 minutes, traversing the pass at an elevation of 16,100 ft will be extremely difficult compared to what it would be if you were at sea level. The objective of this last stage is to build sufficient cardiovascular reserves to handle the effects of hypoxia without having to push your cardiovascular system to the point where it is red-lining.
2. Gear Preparation: Your Lifeline
On a crossover trek, all the gear you carry will be what keeps you alive as you trek through two different climates. You will trek through the rain-soaked forests of Kinnaur and then to the freezing, sub-zero conditions of the Spiti desert, so a strict clothing layer system is mandatory. For the monsoons in the Bhaba Valley, you will need to invest in high-quality waterproof shells with at least a 10,000 mm waterproof rating, and you will need to pack down jackets rated for -10°C for the chilly nights that you will spend in the area of Mangrungse. It is most important to wear trekking boots that are broken in and have some depth to the lugs to assist with the scree running descent. A single blister or lost toenail on Day 3 can make the next 40 km an extremely difficult trek through pain.

The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is thought to be India's most dramatic crossover experience, providing an incredible and profound change of both the sensory and spiritual quality of the two very different worlds. This trek begins in the lush Bhaba Valley in Kinnaur, surrounded by the spectacularly green alpine sanctuary complete with vast cedar forests, vast apple orchards, and enormous wooden houses built from woodcarvings in Kafnu. The life here is an incredible fusion of both Hindu and Buddhist life, and therefore the life of the local people is impacted significantly by fertile meadows and by the ancient mountain gods. When you reach the top of the Pass, the landscape quickly changes and becomes almost incomprehensible. Gone is the green landscape, as it is replaced by the stark landscapes of the Mars-like locations of the Pin Valley National Park. At this high altitude, cold desert of a high-altitude desert you will encounter extremely huge, colourful scree slopes of burnt orange and purple, and these colours are all indicative of the habitat of the snow leopard and the Siberian ibex. From the first view of Mudh to the last geographical landmark you will have on this trek, you will find the Tibetan Buddhist stronghold of Mudh, with prayer flags flapping against the stunningly rugged mountain ranges.
When you trek in the Indian Himalayas, you have a responsibility to take care of the environment as well as the culture of the people who live there.
